Calf Training vs. Calf Implants

By: Anabolic Insider

Q. I’m considering getting calf implants, but haven’t made the final decision yet. Someone asked me something I hadn’t considered the other day. How do I train with calf implants? Am I going to feel them when I do?

A. This is a question better answered by your surgeon, but I have known a few bodybuilders with calf implants and they’ve told me varying things about calf implants. First of all, you’re not going to want to train for a few weeks because of the pain and congestion in the area. It’s like getting breast implants, and then having to walk on them.

But this is a good question because I think people believe that once they get a calf implant, they’re not going to have to train their calves; that that is what they are paying their surgeon to do. I’m here to tell you that isn’t true. While you aren’t going to be focusing on building the gastrocnemius as much as you were prior to the surgery (since this is what is essentially being enhanced) you will still have to keep the soleus up to par and keep ligaments and tendons in the surrounding calf areas, strong.

You’re also going to have to make sure that you don’t actually weaken the area by letting the surrounding calf muscles and tendons ‘go’ to pot. But you can train calves too much after getting implants, and that can cause problems. Often, when a bodybuilder is on a cycle, and they train their implanted calves hard on a regular basis, newly formed muscle can wrap around implants and strangle tissue and cause decreased blood flow. Scar tissue is another problem for a lot of calf implant patients.

Scar tissue creates a kind of negative feedback loop for blood flow in the calves and can prevent new tissue from having adequate oxygen or cause existing tissue to die or atrophy because of inadequate oxygen. I know you didn’t ask my advice as to whether you should get calf implants or not. In fact, I don’t even know if you’re the type of guy who has a bright enough future to actually warrant getting them. But I do know that they can cause more problems than they’re worth.

Just do yourself a favor and don’t get them in Mexico, whatever you do! The late Dan Duchaine’s ex-girlfriend did just that and came back an amputee!
