Over 40 Fitness Book Review

Henry Berry, book reviewer
The Small Press Book Review

OVER 40 & GETTIN' STRONGER - An easy-to-learn strength training workout for adults by Phyllis Rogers. Fitness Press, PO Box 4912, Marietta, GA 30061; SeniorFitnessOnline.com. 2004 143 pp. $19.95 trade paper, 8-1/2" x 11". photographs, glossary, bibliography, resources, index.

Increased energy, improved posture and appearance, better balance, prevention of muscle atrophy and loss, and reduction of joint and muscle pains are major benefits of Rogers' exercises for regaining or maintaining muscle strength for seniors. Such training can also reduce osteoporosis and its effects and in some cases, alleviate diabetes. Most of Rogers's exercises can be done in one's home or other everyday places. The only equipment required for a few are inexpensive dumbbells.

Exercises divided into two workouts cover specific parts of every area of the body--upper legs, inner thighs, buttocks, hips, upper arms, abdomen, etc. The exercises of the second group, named Workout 2001, begin with eight from the first group, but go beyond these with stretching and strengthening exercises on the floor.

The author's exemplary, relevant program is appealing for seniors who do not have the time or do not want to spend the fees for health clubs and the like. As Rogers also notes, the inexpensive weights for her program can be used in numerous beneficial exercises; whereas expensive exercise machines can be used for only a few exercises.

With clear directions and accompanying photographs, Rogers lays out a simple, effective exercise program for older persons for dealing with a major physical problem of aging. This program of "Over 40 and Gettin" Stronger" for increasing strength can help numbers of seniors enjoy healthier, more active lives in their later years.
