Chromium Definition
What Is Chromium?

Chromium is a lustrous, hard, gray metallic element, essential in the diet for efficient carbohydrate metabolism. It improves the ability of insulin to convert glucose to glycogen (the main energy store in muscles). It burns fat and increases lean body mass by accelerating protein metabolism and it may reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases by increasing the proportion of high density lipoproteins in the blood. This element is essential in the diet for efficient carbohydrate metabolism. It improves the ability of insulin to convert glucose to glycogen (the main energy store in muscles). According to nutritionists, people should get enough chromium from a well-balanced diet. Good sources of chromium include liver, meat, cheese, wholegrains, brewer's yeast, and wine. Because insulin requires chromium to function properly, this trace element has significant biological effects in the body. Trivalent chromium works with insulin to move glucose into cells. Chromium as a supplement is usually ingested as chromium picolinate.
