Metabolism Definition
What Is Metabolism?

The sum of all the physical and chemical processes by which living organized substance is produced and maintained (anabolism) and also the transformation by which energy is made available for the uses of the organism (catabolism). Metabolism is the set of bio-chemical processes (reactions) that occur in living organisms (within cells and tissues) in order to maintain life. These processes allow organisms to grow and reproduce, maintain their structures, and respond to their environments. Metabolism is usually divided into two categories. Catabolism breaks down large molecules, for example to harvest energy in cellular respiration. Anabolism, on the other hand, uses energy to construct components of cells such as proteins and nucleic acids. It can be expressed as, all the physical and chemical processes by which living, organized substance is produced and maintained and the transformations by which energy is made available for use by an organism.
