What Is St. John's Wort?

Increases the levels of specific neurotransmitters in the brain. Observed to relieve depression. St. John's Wort is medicinal plant extract known by its botanical name, Hypericum perforatum, is derived from a yellow flowering plant. It can be used as a herbal remedy for mild to moderate depression, anxiety, and/or sleep disturbances/disorders. St. John's Wort may also reduce chronic tension headaches. St. John's Wort also raises levels of serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine - neurotransmitters that help boost morale and mood. St. John's wort has been effective in reducing depressive symptoms in those with mild to moderate but not severe (called major) depression. St. John's wort has also shown promise in treating the following conditions, a few of which are related to depression. They are alcoholism, bacterial infections, HIV infection and AIDS, premenstrual syndrome (PMS), Seasonal affective disorder (SAD), Viral encephalitis, wounds, minor burns, hemorrhoids and ear pain from an ear infection.
