Alpha-Ketoglutarate Definition
What Is Alpha-Ketoglutarate?

Alpha-ketoglutarate (also called oxo-glutarate) is an essential and significant biological compound. It is the keto acid produced by de-amination of glutamate, an intermediate in the Krebs cycle. It is the salt or ester of alpha-ketoglutaric acid. Alpha-ketoglutaric acid is one of two ketone derivatives of glutaric acid. Alpha-ketoglutarate dehydrogenase, an enzyme that catalyses the oxidative decarboxylation of 2-ketoglutaric acid to succinyldihydrolipoate; the succinyl group is later transferred to CoA and the reduced lipoate is oxidised by NAD+; a complex that is a part of the tricarboxylic acid cycle. In combination with L-ornithine, Alpha-ketoglutarate forms OKG, an amino acid compound which improves performance in hypercatabolic states associated with such activities as vigorous sports and weightlifting.
