What Is Linoleic Acid?

An essential fatty acid (9, 12, octadecadienoic acid), occurs as a glyceride component in many fats and oils. Linoleic acid is an essential polyunsaturated fatty acid which must be obtained from food. It belongs to the family called omega-6 fatty acids, obtained in the diet principally from vegetable seeds and polyunsaturated margarines. Chemically, linoleic acid is a carboxylic acid with an 18-carbon chain and two cis double bonds; the first double bond is located at the sixth carbon from the omega end. Linoleic acid is the raw material for a number of compounds vital for health. Linoleic acid is especially important for the proper growth and development of infants.
